The Friends of the Château de Montaigut (Midi-Pyrénées)    retour haut de page

This association has restored the Château de Montaigut (11th-15th century) and turned it into a cultural centre which it now manages. This example of national heritage is presented to schoolchildren in one day to one week courses.
Different activities are organised in the castle : a training course in plaster working, medieval cooking, games for children, etc...In August, the court of the castle is turned into a stage for a theatre festival. The association has also laid out paths in accordance with several nature themes round the castle  : the tree path, the lime path, the foutain path, etc...

The district and local associations have asked the Friends of the Château de Montaigut to restore and safeguard buildings and natural sites in the departement of Aveyron. There is permanent team working throughout the year and various volunteer team working in summer on buildings such as castles and churches.
The techniques use local materials : limestone paving, restoration of lauze roofing, stone carving, etc...

Throughout the year, the association trains around twenty unemployed people in heritage skills. they undergo formal training but can also take part in volunteer work and leisure activities.

The Club Marpen (Poitou-Charentes)    retour haut de page

This association was created in 1969. It works on seven sites and historical buildings, three of them listed by the French national trust. Participants are, for example, presently working on the medieval site of Sigogne, where there is a 14th and 16th century gate house tower with beautiful vaulted rooms. Restoration work started in 2001. The aim is to turn the tower into holiday accomodation. The work consists mainly of stone masonry and stone cutting.

Every summer, Marpen organises 15 volunteer restoration initiatives, each for a period of two weeks, and open to both teenagers and adults. These attract many volunteers from various countries, for example :

  • a Hungarian architecture school, which sends students to work on the sites,
  • an Algerian heritage restoration association, which sends volunteers for training,
  •  a French-Ukrainian exchange association, which offers young Ukrainians interested in France a novel introduction to the region.

Marpen also organises heritage classes. These last from two to five days, introducing schoolchildren from all over France to their architectural heritage. The following topics are covered :
  • stone, its role in rural heritage, a first approach to stone cutting and sculpture,
  • wood and woodcrafts,
  • colour, its origins and use,
  • stained glass,
  • plants and their use through the ages.

Throughout the year the association organises training sessions, giving 20 people the opportunity to acquire skills in stone masonry, stone cutting, woodwork and carpentry.
