Anzi Historical Alley

Organised by "Ruan Yisan Foundation"

From age 18

Involve yourself in the restoration of a historic mansion in Shanxi province, northern China.

The heritage site

The historic district of Anzi Alley was once home to important merchant families, notably the Duan, Tao and Xue clans, whose grand residences still stand today. No. 11 Anzi Alley, built in the 52nd year of the Kangxi emperor's reign (1713) by Duan Yi, a candidate for provincial administration, retains its original structural integrity and illustrates the architectural style typical of courtyard houses in southern Shanxi.

Xinjiang county, where this heritage site is located, has always been a crossroads of river and land, earning it the reputation of being home to "the seventy-two traditional trades". It's an area distinguished by the variety and quality of its crafts. Today, the county has a population of around 230,000, and is part of the city of Yuncheng.

Planned work

Under the guidance of local craftsmen, volunteers will contribute to the systematic restoration of the building. This includes the dismantling and conservation of the wooden structure and masonry techniques for the brick walls.

Volunteers will also be trained in the region's traditional craftsmanship practices.

Group living and accommodation

Volunteers will be provided with permanent accommodation in the village, close to the site.

All meals are provided by the Ruan Yisan Foundation, with volunteers taking it in turns to help with household chores.

A full schedule of the project is distributed to volunteers on arrival at the site.
