Help restore a monumental facade in the heart of Bizerte's medina.
|
Bizerte is the capital of a region that bears the same name. It has a population of around 150,000. It is located 60 km from the capital Tunis.
Bizerte was originally a Phoenician and then a Roman trading post. It developed from the 13th century onwards under the reign of the Hafsides. A land of asylum, in the 17th century the city welcomed Andalusians driven out of Spain by the Inquisition, and at the turn of the century, white Russians, some of whom still live in Bizerte. Known for the diversity of its beaches, Bizerte is also brimming with historic sites. For example, the Spanish fort, the town's open-air theater and, of course, the medina, situated on the edge of a small fishing port.
Created in 1987, the Association de Sauvegarde la de Medina de Bizerte aims to improve living conditions in the city's historic districts, promote heritage and safeguard collective memory. Activities will be carried out under the guidance of teams from the Association de Sauvegarde de la Medina, which has its own café not far away, a popular spot for Bizerte residents, not least because of its exceptional location. The aim of the current project is to rehabilitate the landscape of the Ksiba quay, and reveal the great heritage value of the Sidi El Henni Redoubt site.

This project involves restoring the exterior façade of the Sidi El Henni Redoubt. This includes traditional masonry work, lime plastering and removal of the concrete that disfigures the monument.
A local craftsman, a site manager and architects will provide technical supervision.

Group living and accommodation
|
Given the local climate, work on site will be carried out in a single morning session, from 7am to 1pm. There will be a 15-minute break. The afternoons are generally free. A local coordinator will accompany volunteers to the site and to their accommodation.
Volunteers will stay in a guest house in the medina.
Volunteers will take turns preparing meals. Markets and stores are nearby. At the association's headquarters, you will have access to a computer with Internet connection and a printer, if required.
Household chores are to be agreed between volunteers and the coordinator.

Leisure and other activities
|
In addition to the generally free afternoons (excursions, swimming, discovering Tunisian culture), day excursions are planned. The region abounds in interesting natural sites. Tunis and its historic quarters are also well worth a visit.
