Founded in 1922 by Émile Galtier, a journalist and local historian, theSociété d'histoire et d'archéologie "Le Vieux Saint Maur " ("Old Saint Maur " )aims to study local history and archaeology, and to promote knowledge and conservation of memorabilia and sites from the past, and their enhancement.

The association has been a member of Union REMPART since 1973.

Numerous REMPART volunteer workcamps and heritage classes were hosted on the site of the former Saint-Maur abbey (7th century) until 1989.

Since 2017, the association has organized a teenage work camp in partnership with the youth department of the town of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés. Scheduled for a week in June and July, the workcamp combines small-scale restoration activities on the abbey site with heritage discovery and initiation workshops.

Since 2019, week-end workcamps for local volunteers of all ages have been organized in spring and autumn.
