Cutlery internship in Castelroc

Supervised by an artisan-cutler, this course offers you to make your forged and tempered knife; you will learn the traditional techniques of blacksmithing and cutlery.
It takes place in the medieval forge located in the lower courtyard of the castle of Castelroc to allow you to experience an immersion in the 13th century!
Castelroc, the medieval castle of La Roque, is located in the upper Dadou valley, a stone's throw from the episcopal city of Albi. Built between the 11th and 12th centuries (Cathar era), it dates back to its Carolingian era. A small path through the woods allows you to reach the rocky outcrop which majestically supports it.
The first day of the course will be devoted to the handling of tools and fire the first theoretical explanations necessary, a first knife "test" will be forged and hardened. This first knife will be a rough forge with a full handle, that is to say without a facing plate on the handle.
At the end of this first day, the trainee will have the keys to prepare a realistic project to carry out the following two days. Each trainee will leave at least with a forged knife.
Educational goals :
- discover the work of hot steel, move the material initially in the form of a bar, round, octagon ... to obtain a rough blade,
- understand the different states of steel as a function of temperatures and heat treatments,
- make a hardening (oil, goop, or water, selective or integral ...),
- finalize a grinding process after quenching and sharpen the blade.
Note: At Castelroc, the site is an activity for visitors. You will therefore be dressed as were the artisans of the 13th century in Medieval Occitania (clothes provided). The immersion, for you as for the visitor, must be total and perfect for the greatest pleasure of all. The reception of volunteers takes place at the Albi station in the middle of the day on the first day of the construction site or at 3 p.m. at the village gîte.
