On the program: exchanges and activities on heritage in Europe, visit of local heritage, discovery of techniques and know-how of built heritage through restoration activities at the Château de Gombervaux in the heart of the country of Joan of Arc.

An imposing 14th century building, listed as a Historic Monument, Gombervaux was strategically located on the border between the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire. It is surrounded by water moats. Its imposing 22-metre tower-porch notably houses a harrow and its wheelhouse in working order, carried out during international volunteer projects in 2017 & 2018.

The castle played an important role in history: housing French troops during the Thirty Years War, barony under Louis XIV, it was not abandoned by its owners until 1763. It escaped the destruction of the French Revolution, but its gradual abandonment has made it vulnerable to the damage of time. Although an important part of the castle has disappeared, it is nonetheless a veritable jewel of medieval architecture in Lorraine. Indeed, the castle having known only minor refittings, the buildings which remain today kept their original aspect.

Gombervaux is also a precious natural site: the Association works all year round to preserve the local flora and fauna. This mission is part of a process of environmental protection, for educational purposes and awareness of ecology.

Based on a layout file and the prescriptions of the Architect des Bâtiments de France, restoration of the upper half of the west tower of the Château de Gombervaux:

- disbursement / restoration of damaged stones,

- replacement with new stones cut on site,

- making lime mortar,

- purging of old seals.

Work at height, on secure scaffolding with loan of safety equipment.

The team is made up of three groups of volunteers:

- The French, recruited through REMPART,

- European partners.

Each group appoints a "leader", who will organize with the other leaders on organizational matters, will ensure the well-being of his group and the good understanding between all the participants.

Accommodation in a barnum tent with access to water and electricity. > volunteers bring sleeping bags and pillows .

Participants must bring a pair of safety shoes.

The Gombervaux Association organizes several leisure activities during the worksite: moments of relaxation and collective games, music, outings to discover the local heritage, walks...
