Discover the art of calade in the heart of a medieval village in Provence.

Sheltered by its rocky outcrop, the village of Volonne offers a maze of medieval alleys which are gradually recovering their original coating, the calade, whose construction technique consists of covering the ground with small stones planted very tightly on a bed of sand. You will learn "the art of calade" and discover the many surrounding villages, the green Gorges du Verdon, the tumultuous Durance and all the geological curiosities of the region.

At the foot of the Alps, between Luberon and Verdon, if you need green, this site is for you.

Progress of the construction site:

  • Creation of the cove in stones with water flow
  • Lime filling

Technique used: Lime stone calade

Accommodation: The group will be accommodated at the municipal kindergarten which is a 5-minute walk from the construction site. Volunteers will sleep in classrooms set up as dormitories on camp beds. They will benefit from an equipped kitchen. They will use the showers of the dojo which is just opposite the municipal school. Possibility to bring your own mattress or camp bed.

Collective life: Taking charge of the tasks of daily life (meal preparation, maintenance) on a rotating basis.
Work on site on weekday mornings.
Free time in the afternoons and weekends, choice of visits and group activities.

On all our construction sites, we want volunteers to be real players in their stay, so we will invite them to consult each other in order to offer the activities and events of their choice, in accordance with the values that the association wishes to defend.

Some ideas for outings: The Dalle aux Ammonites known by geologists from all over the world, the Romanesque monastery of Ganagobie, the Priory, museum and garden of Salagon, the Citadel of Sisteron, the Pénitents des Mées, hikes in the lower Alpine massifs and the Luberon, swimming in the Gorges du Verdon and surrounding lakes.

Highlight during the work: Great medieval festival in the heart of the village. A full weekend to discover life in the Middle Ages.
