The origin of the castle is not well known. Dom Calmet places its construction between 1010 and 1020 by the bishop of Toul. It is located on a hill overlooking the Vraine valley. The village will develop at the foot of the castle. The plan is that of a square enclosure confined to the origin of four circular towers and pierced by two doors.

The castle was rebuilt at the beginning of the 15th century by Guillaume de Dommartin and embellished between the second half of the 15th and the 1520s by Diane de Dommartin. The latter built the stately home in a Renaissance style. It also builds storage areas and a second home. During the Thirty Years War, the castle and the village were destroyed and the estate, which fell into the family of the princes of Croy after Diane's marriage to Philippe de Croy, was sold to the Dupasquier family.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Dupasquiers, who became barons of Dommartin, affirmed the agricultural vocation of the castle, which then underwent major restructuring.

Today, most of the medieval southern front is preserved, including the portal and important remains of the house. It is the same for the 15th century barn and for the house back on the original 16th century courtyard. If the northeast tower has disappeared, the bases of the northwest and southwest towers are partly preserved. The southeast tower is the best preserved since it retains its first level and two loopholes. This tower has been visited by young volunteers every summer since 2009.

The building is listed as a historic monument.
