Château d'Urfé was built between the 12th and 16th centuries at an altitude of over 900 m. It is the fruit of the hostility of the different lords of the region and is thus a border castle.

In the hands of the powerful Urfé family for six centuries, it was acquired in 1766 by the Marquis de Simiane who ceded it in 1781 to the family of Meaux, the current owner. From the Revolution, the castle was the victim of vandalism and looting.

The castle is registered on the additional inventory of historic monuments in July 1946.

To save and enhance this monument, the "Renaissance d'Urfé" association was created in 1979.
