Medieval bookbinding - Berzy

This workshop introduces you to the techniques of 12th-century Cistercian bookbinding, as used at theVauclair Abbey near Berzy-le-Sec.
In particular, you'll learn how to prepare wooden aisles, sew the book block onto leather sinew using a cousoir, mount the book block onto the aisles, make embroidered headbands and make cover books.
This workshop will also provide an opportunity to learn about the history of this type of binding and the manufacture of leather and parchment.
Guided tours on the themes of medieval fortification and religious iconography, visit to the castle and church of Berzy le Sec.
